24 Days of Crochetmas: Day 6 – Mystery Christmas Blanket Square 3

For this project there will be 12 different types square. 6 will be different stitch swatches, that aren’t your normal Double or Treble crochet, and 6 will be Christmas-themed motifs. You’ll just have to wait and see what they are!

If you don’t want to make it Christmas-themed, then you can simply do the plain squares in lots of different colours, or keep it in one colour and bring the fun with the different types of stitch. You will end up with 12 squares, 6 plain squares, and 6 patterned squares. You can do this in any combination that you like, so make sure you pay attention to the yarn amounts of each square.

Square 3: Basketweave Square

Note: We will be making a 4, 5, 4, 5, 4 Basketweave st to achieve the right width for the rectangle. If you find that this makes it too wide or too thin, you can try changing the combinations. There is also one tr (or ch3) on each end of the rows.

You will need

110g (just over 1 ball) x Chunky yarn in cream (or your chosen colour) (I have used Women’s Institute Soft & Chunky, 70% acrylic, 30% merino)
10mm hook (this gives a slightly looser tension, I also hold my yarn quite tightly)

Special stitches
FPtr:
Front Post Treble Crochet. Insert hook from front to back around the post of the stitch below instead of into the top V, and come back out the other side of the post, yarn over and complete the Treble as normal.
BPtr: Back Post Treble Crochet. Insert hook from back to front, then back to the front around the post (as FPtr) yarn over and complete as a normal Treble.

Pattern

Ch 27.

Row 1: In fourth ch from st, tr in each ch to end. Turn. (25 sts)
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as a tr here and throughout), FPtr in next 4 sts, BPtr in next 5 sts, FPtr in next 4 sts, BPtr in next 5 sts, FPtr in next 4 sts, tr into top of ch 3. Turn. (25 sts)
Row 3: Ch 3, BPtr in next 4 sts, FPtr in next 5 sts, BPtr in next 4 sts, FPtr in next 5 sts, BPtr in next 4 sts, tr into top of ch 3. Turn. (25 sts)

This forms the first set of the basketweave. You will now for the opposite for the next 3 rows.

Row 4: Ch 3, BPtr in next 4 sts, FPtr in next 5 sts, BPtr in next 4 sts, FPtr in next 5 sts, BPtr in next 4 sts, tr into top of ch 3. Turn. (25 sts)
Row 5: Ch 3, FPtr in next 4 sts, BPtr in next 5 sts, FPtr in next 4 sts, BPtr in next 5 sts, FPtr in next 4 sts, tr into top of ch 3. Turn. (25 sts)
Row 6: Ch 3, BPtr in next 4 sts, FPtr in next 5 sts, BPtr in next 4 sts, FPtr in next 5 sts, BPtr in next 4 sts, tr into top of ch 3. Turn. (25 sts)

Row 7: Rep row 3.
Rows 8-9: Rep rows 2-3.

Rows 10-12: Rep rows 4-6.

Now repeat rows 7-12 until you reach your desired length. For this project it is around 42cm. I found I reached this with 9 sets of 3 (27 rows).

Next row: Dc around rectangle (44 sts in each side, 25 stitches in the top and bottom), 3 dc in each corner.

Block so it measures 30x45cm.

Square 4 is coming on the 8th!
