24 Days of Crochetmas: Day 5 – Festive Baubles

You will need
Small amount of any DK yarn (I’ve used WI Premium Acrylic) in three colours.
3.5mm crochet hook
Polystyrene Bauble Shapes (I’ve used these from Hobbycraft)

Small Stripy Bauble

First half:
In col 1, make a magic ring.
Rnd 1: 6 dc into the magic ring and pull tight. Join with a sl st. (6 sts)
Rnd 2: 2 dc in each st. Change to col 2 and join with a sl st. (12 sts)
Rnd 3: *1 dc, 2 dc* 6 times, join with sl st. (18 sts)
Rnd 4: *1 dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc* 6 times, change to col 3 and join with sl st. (24 sts)
Rnd 5: 1 dc in each st around, join with sl st (24 sts)
Rnd 6: 1 dc in each st around, change to col 1, join with sl st.
Rnd 7-8: 1 dc in each st, join with sl st.
Fasten off and wave in ends.

Second half:
In col 1, make a magic ring.
Rnd 1: 6 dc into the magic ring and pull tight. Join with a sl st. (6 sts)
Rnd 2: 2 dc in each st. Change to col 3 and join with a sl st. (12 sts)
Rnd 3: *1 dc, 2 dc* 6 times, join with sl st. (18 sts)
Rnd 4: *1 dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc* 6 times, change to col 2 and join with sl st. (24 sts)
Rnd 5: 1 dc in each st around, join with sl st (24 sts)
Rnd 6: 1 dc in each st around, change to col 1, join with sl st.
Fasten off and leave a long tail.

Place the two sides on the smallest polystyrene innard (1 in) and sew together, putting two stitches into each v on the first side – this makes it look like a seamless join.

Large Spike St Bauble

Make two halves:
With col 1 make a magic ring.
Rnd 1: Make 6 dc into the magic ring and pull tight, join with a sl st .
Rnd 2: 2 dc in each st around, change to col 3 and join with sl st. (12 sts)
Rnd 3: *1 dc, 2 dc into next st* 6 times, join with a sl st. (18 sts)
Rnd 4: *1 dc into next 2 sts, 2 dc into next st* 6 times, change to col 2, join with a sl st. (24 sts)
Rnd 5: *1 dc into next 4 sts, spike st into second row below the same st (into the to of the col 1 row – same here and throughout), change to col 1, join with sl st.  (30 sts)
Rnd 6: *1 dc into next 2 sts, spike st into next st, 1 dc into the same st (the one behind the spike st), 1 dc in next two sts*, rep set of 6 sts 6 times around, change to col 3, join with sl st. (36 sts)

From here the spike sts will go into the V of the spike st two rows below. You can find the correct place to insert the hook by putting it between the two threads, and aiming it at the top of the same colour you are currently working with. Rep the next two rows changing between the three colours in the right order. You will end on col 2 (the third in the rotation).

Rnd 7: *1 dc in next 5 sts, spike st in next st* 6 times. (36 sts)
Rnd 8: *1 dc in next 2 sts, spike st, 1 dc in next 3 sts* 6 times (36 sts)

Rep until rnd 13. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join together the two sides around the 2.5in ball, sewing in place, and going between the spike sts as you would have had you crocheting the row. IF you don’t want to see the join do in col 2. I have done in col 1.
