Learn to Crochet Granny Squares & Flower Motifs by Nicki Trench
The granny square is a fundamental part of crochet life, you can’t watch a TV show these days without at least one family having a granny square throw on their sofa. It’s one of my all-time favourite things to crochet, they’re so simple and they can make up so quickly, too.
But in Nicki’s Learn to Crochet Granny Squares & Flower Motifs I’ve been introduced to even more ways that I can utilise these perfect motifs. While the term ‘granny square’ might literally make you think of your granny, that simply won’t be the case with this book. The projects are fresh and bright, let alone inventive.
Nicki is a woman of many talents, that don’t just extend to yarn crafts, she’s a wedding cake designer, a tutor, a writer and editor, she’s not a one-trick pony and that shows in her designs.
There are 25 projects in Learn to Crochet, from bunting to cushions, but they’re all individual and new takes on traditional ideas. Particular favourites include the Sweetheart Blanket and the Child’s Granny Square Top. Not only does this book teach you new styles of granny square, but it gives you such a large breadth of how to use them, too. Personally it makes me want to crack out my yarn stash and start whipping up all number of projects that I don’t have time to finish – but, to me, that is the sign of a good book, one that makes you want to turn your back on your plans and start something else from its pages.
The start of the book also plays home to every technique you will need to complete the patterns in the book. The illustrations are clear and concise and the language is accessible. While you might want a little more explanation as a complete beginner, the book does a great job of explaining the major techniques, and delving into the depths of the more complex techniques that you will need, too. This would make a great gift for the casual hobbyist crocheter along with anyone looking to further their portfolio of motifs.
Learn to Crochet Granny Squares & Flower Motifs is available from CICO Books from 6th February for £9.99.
