The slip knot is the very first step in 90% of crochet patterns (when you're not using a magic ring!), and there are a number of ways to do it. Below we explore 3 of them.

The Slip Knot

Method 1: On the Table

1. Lay your yarn on the table in a loop, with your yarn tail on top.

2. Tuck the yarn tail under the loop.

3. Ensuring the yarn tail doesn't come through the loop, pull the yarn through the loop and tighten but pulling both the yarn end and the ball end.

Method 2: On Your Finger

1. Wrap your yarn around your finger twice, with the yarn tail to your finger tip.

2. Lift the loop closest to your hand over the loop closest to your finer tip.

3. Repeat step 2, this ime bringing the yarn over the top of the loop and the end of your finger.

Method 2: On Your Hook

1. Wrap your yarn around your finger crossing your yarn tail over the top of the ball end.

Top tips

  • No matter which method you use, make sure you don't pull the yarn tail through the loop!
