Varigated super chunky weight yarn, approx 120m.

For the example I used: A super chunky sample that I acquired from the LoveCrafts office about 10 years ago...

  • 12mm hook
  • Yarn needle

Measurements

Can be made to fit all sizes using the tension above.

eg: to fit 50cm circumference and 30cm length,
6 rows x 5 = 30 rows
3 x 6 sts = 18 + 1 ch.

Abbreviations

This pattern uses UK terminology throughout, below you can see the US terms in brackets for easy translation.

  • blo: Back loop only
  • sl st: Slip stitch
  • dc: Double Crochet

Tension

6 rows by 6 sts measures 10 cm.

Pattern Begins

Using 12mm hook and your yarn of choice, ch 22.

Rnd 1 (WS): dc into the second ch from st, dc in next 17 sts. sl st in last 4 sts. (21 sts)

Rnd 2 (RS): Ch 1, dc into the BLO of the first 4 sl sts. dc in next 10 sts. Dc in BLO of last 7 sts. (21 sts).

Rnd 3: Ch 1, Dc in BLO of first 7 sts, dc in both loops of next 10 sts, sl st into last 4 sts. (21 sts)

Rep row 2 and 3 until you are happy with the length of the hat around your head, ending on a RS row. 

With the WS facing, sl st the edges together. Weave the end through the sl st end, and pull together, sew over the end until secure. 

Weave in your ends.

Finishing

Make a pom pom with your left over yarn, and attach firmly to the top centre of the hat.
